|
contributed by: Jeremy Gawongna
Mayoyao,
Ifugao – The deterioration of culture in this world heritage site due
to Christianity, formal education, economic condition and modernization
prompted a youth group here called Pochon to organize the Pfoto' ad Majawjaw, a rice harvest festival meant to raise awareness on the interplay of the watershed, rice terraces, people, and culture.
Guests
from Manila, Pampanga, Baguio, and the provincial government joined the
festival over the week-end which started with an orientation where Pochon
members stressed that the preservation of culture that nurtured the
rice terraces for the 2,000 years is the concern not only of the
Ifugaos but of every Filipino.
The
Mayoyao native house, being the most valuable possession in the Mayoyao
culture, was given highlight during the festival so that one of the
activities was the demonstration of native house construction at
Mayoyao Museum by the indigenous knowledge (IK) holders using a
detachable miniature house.
