La Trinidad, Benguet. The ShelterBox team members arrived on the evening of October 16, 2009 at the Benguet State University grounds with initial 32 pieces of ShelterBox Kits. They were earlier transported from Antipolo to Clark Air Base and transported to Baguio City via military trucks. Joining the team are Rotary members of Baguio City and La Trinidad who assisted them.
Tent Community in Tublay, Benguet
ShelterBox is a disaster relief charity organization providing emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to victims affected by calamities and wars. The organization sustains the operations thru international donations and aids and to date has helped in about 80 worldwide disasters in almost 50 countries. This program was a brainchild of a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver Tom Henderson who in 2000 started it with the help of fellow Rotary members.
These aids come in the form of shelterboxes. The boxes originally contains a tent, mats, thermal blankets, pots and kitchen utensils, water purification needs, childrens pack etc. With the urgent need of shelter in the Cordilleras though, the team decided to just bring in the tents to address the problem. That way they could bring in more tents than just a few boxes with complete kits. A tent could house a maximum of 11 people.
This project was a response to the fact that when disaster strikes the foremost needs of food, medicines and clothing are mostly thought of but by the end of the day the people affected are still homeless. This would give a family a little bit comfort and dignity while rebuilding their lives.
Tent Installation Demo - Tublay, Benguet
In Wangal, La Trinidad were erected 7 tents and 24 others in the hectare wide lot of BSU going to the Strawberry Farms. In Tublay were erected a total of 22 tents in different evacuation centers. Mr. Brian Joy and his colleagues from ShelterBox came all the way from UK to assist the Rotary of Baguio-Benguet and the Benguet officials in affected places install the tents. These would temporarily house the displaced families and individuals until they could and would have found shelter or restored their houses. The team is still going around the affected provinces assessing the conditions and those who would be needing the kind of help and project they provide.

I just want to thank those kind hearted peole who donated those shelter boxes, it will be of great help to our kailians in this time of disaster, until such time that they can recover they have some temporary shelter to cover their heads, though in the close knit culture of the igorots, relatives will not allow them to stay there for long.
Benguet became the very first provincial government to be established in the Philippines, a year earlier than the inauguration of the civil government of the Philippines, when it was established by the Philippine Commission on November 23, 1900 through Act No. 49 with Baguio as its Capital.
