Anitap Festival: Some Reasons To Love Kapangan

Why do I love Kapangan? Let me count the ways...

There is nothing so special about the place to make it stand out among the rest I thought. Years ago when I first stepped into Kapangan I saw it as a dreary place, uneventful and just remotely simple there’s nothing much to it. A few years later I was invited back and was taken around. It was like going there a first time and seeing everything a different way, or maybe I matured and saw it in another perspective. But like a book with a plain cover, Kapangan when read is a bestselling novel. And exploring the place beats sitting around and just reading about it.

In the olden tradition of celebrating the different stages of rice cycle comes a phase called am-among where families gather and join other clan members to share the bounties of their labor. That in the yearly non-stop circle of activities and work, they set aside a time to rest, settle down a bit and just mingle and enjoy the company of family while thanking the Giver for everything that has come and gone during the season.

Lang-ay in Bontoc: A Growing Tradition
Contributed by: Art Tibaldo

The vernacular hooray "Gawis ay MountainProvince" was repeatedly heard as gongs echoed incessantly in this Philippine upland province's 2007 Lang-ay Festival. First launched three years ago to celebrate the province's founding anniversary, "Lang-ay" which means to share happiness, promote family solidarity, hospitality, and nurture friendship with a toast of home-brewed wine has become a major local event. Visiting expatriates, tourists, neighboring townfolks and covering journalists were once again treated to a cultural bonanza as residents of MountainProvince showed off not only their unique culture but also their warm hospitality.
