In Search of Lost Cultures

The search for lost cultures in the North has become a passion for me, becoming an obsession of sorts, like a tingling itch that needed a good scratching. From the unexperienced, unexposed city girl evolved the unrelenting adventurer. I go trekking miles into the wild, open spaces, climbing rocks and poking crevices to get to something I thought would lead to something more interesting.

Legends and myths are said to be borne out of the imaginations and beliefs of people. Whether they are true or not, at one time or another they served a purpose and somehow put certain mysteries to places and people. In a remote stony mountain cliff called Suy-uban in Bila, Bauko, their mythical creature was a serpent of some sort.

The falls puts in enough water during the dry season, and fills up this pool. Ideal diving and swimming and picniking area.

Today was the mixed color of life and the passage of time. The fresh greens mingling with the browns and russets of old vegetation. The leaves rustle under us, fallen from trees along the not so beaten path to a suspension bridge seen on the other side of the mountain. Like worker ants parading to a food source we hiked in a line along the dirt path recently and specially cleared for us. The sun was high, creating an almost obscure shadow trampled under our feet, suggesting it was mid noon. Looking above I can now see a narrow concreted stairway leading to the bridge, and the backside of those that went ahead before me. Pushing the last few steps the guide stopped me awhile.

To explore the guts of Kapangan, one only has to travel an excess of one hour from Baguio City to get there. From there its free wheeling good time, that is if you are the spelunking-hiking-trekking-mountain climbing type of person. Otherwise though the views from afar and within reach of a nearby road access for vehicles are still awesome and grand.

Trivia

In 1907, Mt.Province (known then as the Lepanto-BontocProvince) became a special province of the Philippines comprising the sub-provinces of Bontoc-Lepanto, Amburayan, Ifugao, Kalinga, Benguet and Apayao. It was then reorganized to comprise the sub-provinces of Benguet, Ifugao, Bontoc, Apayao and Kalinga (BIBAK) adopting the name of Mt.Province. It was again divided into 4 separate provinces – Benguet, Ifugao, Mt.Province (new), Kalinga-Apayao – through R.A. 4695.

HEART BAGUIO/BURNHAM advocates sit it out and do weekly bonfire vigils at the Pine Trees of The World Park (back of Athletic Bowl) for more than a month now.
