There I was sitting alone in the corner of a small dark room. My eyes are riveted on top of a table in the center of the room where assorted things rest waiting for whoever has the courage to use them. It was night and cold but I am perspiring heavily which dampened my shirt. It’s already 2 am now and my companions are all asleep. I wanted to go to the room assigned to me and close my eyes too but somehow I couldn’t. I keep thinking of the reasons, and inventing them if these are not enough, to justify my being here.
You are repeatedly told while growing up that the price of a gift isn’t important, it is the thought that counts. When does the thought stop counting? It is a question I have asked myself time and time again. I guess it stops counting the moment the rewards for the most precious acts we perform for each other are reduced to their sticky commercial value.

For months, the vicious atty. Lorenzo had tirelessly laid all kinds of legal traps for me, and each time I outwitted him. I remember clearly, when we first met he had promised to laugh me right out of the courtroom. Now, as the verdict was read, I looked over at him, and the poor man would not even look at me, pretending to be busy stuffing his losing papers into his brief case. I smiled broadly.
