Baguio City. July 31st, 2010 ticked another mark in the philantrophy works of the Sorority group Sigma Beta Baguio-Benguet Assembly. Pooling resources and efforts, this time they helped another cancer patient raise some funds for her chemotherapy and maintenance medicines. To quote the Sigma Betans, “In an effort to help alleviate the financial suffering of a mother diagnosed with lung cancer currently undergoing palliative treatment, the organization held a Concert for a Cause: A Silver Parade Event at Le Fondue Bar and Restaurant, located at Legarda Road, Baguio City. The event’s theme, “With a Smile”, is inspired by an Eraserheads song, which also bears the same title. It tells of an inspiring tale of a person trying to get by with a smile even with problems seemingly reigning over one’s life. That one person is a mother, whose life they cannot just throw away without a battle. The color Silver is an upgrade of the real color of lung cancer which is pearl - symbolic of the “invisible cancer” that receives far fewer pesos for prevention and treatment or public attention than other types of cancer. In a way, it is also an event that aims to educate the public of the existence and fatality of lung cancer”. For this project they have the many Baguio bands to thank for, who sacrificed their time and sang for the cause. Other sponsors helped out too, to include the Beta Sigma Fraternity, Cordillera Global Organization (CGN) and Unilever Philippines.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE STILL AN UNDERRATED OFFENSE

Baguio City. The statistics of victims and survivors of domestic and intimate relationship violence (DIV) under the Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) are escalating at an alarming rate, but seemingly not given so much attention. In Baguio City and the Cordillera region, only a fraction of the number of victims and survivors come out in the open to report the offense or crime done against them. This mostly accounts for the reasons of fear, cultural beliefs and ignorance of the law regarding the matter and ignorance of their rights.
